About this data

About the US citizenship civics test

The civics test is the part of the naturalization interview where a USCIS officer asks you questions about US government and history. You study a fixed list of official questions; the officer picks some of them and you answer out loud in English.

2025 civics test: 128 questions

If you file Form N-400 on or after 2025-10-20 (October 20, 2025), you take the 2025 civics test.

You study 128 official questions. The officer asks up to 20 of them. You pass as soon as you answer 12 correctly, and the test ends as a fail at 9 wrong answers.

2008 civics test: 100 questions

If you filed Form N-400 before 2025-10-20, you take the 2008 civics test.

You study 100 official questions. The officer asks up to 10 of them. You pass at 6 correct answers, and the test ends as a fail at 5 wrong answers.

65/20 special consideration

If you are 65 or older and have been a permanent resident for 20 years or more when you file, you only study the 20 questions marked with a star (★). The officer asks 10 of them and you need 6 correct, on either version of the test.

How the interview works

  • The test is oral, not multiple choice. The officer reads a question and you answer in your own words; any one of the acceptable answers counts unless the question asks for more than one.
  • The officer stops asking as soon as you have enough correct answers to pass, or enough wrong answers to fail.
  • The same interview also has the English test: you read one of three sentences aloud and write one of three sentences the officer dictates.
  • A few answers depend on where you live or who holds an office on the day of your interview (your senators, your governor, the President, the Speaker of the House). Check them again shortly before the interview.

Every question, with answers and explanations

Each official question has its own page with the answer, a Chinese translation, a short explanation and related questions.

Frequently asked questions

Which civics test will I take, 2025 or 2008?

It depends on the date you filed Form N-400. Filed on or after October 20, 2025: the 2025 test (128 questions). Filed before October 20, 2025: the 2008 test (100 questions).

How many questions do I need to get right?

2025 test: the officer asks up to 20 questions and you need 12 correct. 2008 test: up to 10 questions and 6 correct. With 65/20 special consideration: 10 questions from the 20 starred ones and 6 correct.

Is the civics test multiple choice?

No. The officer asks each question out loud and you answer out loud. You do not need the exact wording; give one of the acceptable answers on the official list.

What do I say for questions like “Who is one of your state’s U.S. senators now?”

Give the answer that is true on the day of your interview for the place where you live. These answers change after elections and appointments, so check your state’s senators and governor and the USCIS test updates page before you go. This site lists them with the date they were last checked.

Can I take the civics test in Chinese?

Only if you qualify for an age-and-residence exemption from the English requirement (50/20, 55/15 or 65/20). Then you may take the civics test in your own language with an interpreter. Everyone else answers in English.
