Why did the United States enter the Vietnam War?

In Chinese 美国为什么参加越南战争?

Official answer

  • To stop the spread of communism为了阻止共产主义的扩散

Why this is the answer

Vietnam was divided into a communist North and a non-communist South. The United States supported South Vietnam and gradually sent more troops, with major combat in the 1960s and early 1970s, because it wanted to stop communism from spreading in Southeast Asia. Like the Korean War, it was part of the Cold War. The official answer is: to stop the spread of communism.
