On September 11, 2001, terrorists hijacked four passenger airplanes. Two were crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, one into the Pentagon (the Defense Department headquarters) in Arlington, Virginia, and the fourth, headed toward Washington, D.C., crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back.
