2025 civics test · Question 28 of 128 · System of Government

Why does each state have two senators?

In Chinese 为什么每个州有两名联邦参议员?

Official answers

  • Equal representation (for small states)(为小州提供)平等代表权
  • The Great Compromise (Connecticut Compromise)大妥协(康涅狄格妥协)

Any one of these answers is accepted unless the question asks for more than one.

Why this is the answer

At the Constitutional Convention in 1787, large and small states disagreed about representation. Large states wanted seats based on population; small states wanted equal votes. The Great Compromise, also called the Connecticut Compromise, solved this: the House is based on population, while every state gets two senators. This gives small states equal representation in the Senate.
