2025 civics test · Question 37 of 128 · System of Government

The President of the United States can serve only two terms. Why?

In Chinese 美国总统最多只能连任两届。为什么?

Official answers

  • (Because of) the 22nd Amendment(因为)第二十二修正案
  • To keep the president from becoming too powerful防止总统权力过大

Any one of these answers is accepted unless the question asks for more than one.

Why this is the answer

The 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, limits a person to being elected president no more than twice. Before that, the two-term limit was only a tradition started by George Washington; Franklin D. Roosevelt broke it by winning four elections. The amendment makes the limit law, which helps keep any one president from holding power for too long or becoming too powerful.
