Why this is the answer
Americans do not elect the president by a simple national popular vote. Instead, voters in each state choose electors, and the electors cast the votes that decide who becomes president; a candidate needs a majority of the 538 electoral votes (270) to win. The Founders created this system as a compromise between letting the people elect the president and having Congress choose.
