How can people become United States citizens?

In Chinese 人们如何成为美国公民?

Official answers

  • Be born in the United States, under the conditions set by the 14th Amendment在第十四修正案规定的条件下出生在美国
  • Naturalize归化入籍
  • Derive citizenship (under conditions set by Congress)(在国会规定的条件下)衍生获得公民身份

Any one of these answers is accepted unless the question asks for more than one.

Why this is the answer

There are three main paths to U.S. citizenship. The 14th Amendment says people born in the United States and subject to its jurisdiction are citizens. Immigrants can apply and naturalize, which is the process this test is part of. Some people, such as certain children of U.S. citizens, derive citizenship automatically under conditions set by laws Congress passes.
