Why this is the answer

The Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776, announced that the American colonies were free from British control. It also stated that all people are created equal and have inherent rights, such as life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, that no government can take away. These ideas about individual freedom still shape American government today.
