Why this is the answer

Several problems divided the North and the South before the Civil War. Slavery was the central issue: Southern states depended on enslaved labor, while many in the North opposed slavery and its spread to new territories. The regions also had different economies, and they disagreed about how much power the states should have compared with the federal government (states' rights).
