2025 civics test · Question 1 of 128 · Principles of American Government

What is the form of government of the United States?

In Chinese 美国的政体是什么?

Official answers

  • Republic共和国
  • Constitution-based federal republic以宪法为基础的联邦共和国
  • Representative democracy代议制民主

Any one of these answers is accepted unless the question asks for more than one.

Why this is the answer

The United States is a republic: the people hold power and elect representatives to make decisions for them, instead of being ruled by a king. Its government is based on a written Constitution and shares power between the national government and the states, which is why it is called a constitution-based federal republic. Because citizens choose leaders through elections, it is also a representative democracy.
