2008 civics test · Question 25 of 100 · System of Government

Why do some states have more Representatives than other states?

In Chinese 为什么有些州的众议员比其他州多?

Official answers

  • (because of) the state’s population(因为)该州的人口
  • (because) they have more people(因为)他们人口更多
  • (because) some states have more people(因为)有些州人口更多

Any one of these answers is accepted unless the question asks for more than one.

Why this is the answer

Seats in the House of Representatives are divided among the states according to population, so states with more people get more Representatives. The population is counted in the census every ten years, and seats can shift among states afterward. Every state still gets at least one Representative.
